BE THE CHANGE.

“If we are to have peace on earth, our loyalties must become ecumenical rather than sectional. Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Georgia, 1967

This meditation utilizes the repetition of affirmations and mudras (aka hand postures) as a bridge to the core principle of Dr. King’s teachings and modern yogic philosophy. Through cultivation of inner resources this practice prepares our being to radiate ahimsa outward, to others.

2:55pm EST | 11:55am PST
“Martin Luther King Jr. - The Peaceful Warrior”
w/NYA PATRINOS
Can we find peace in the eye of the storm?  Can we be warriors and yogis? Can we change the world and keep our moral center?  Martin Luther King Jr. exemplified the peaceful warrior archetype. He was unwavering in his commitment to non-violent action as a path to equity and social change. On MLK Day, let’s together, practice warrior variations to fortify peace in our hearts and at the same time acknowledge our fighting spirit. In community, we can prepare ourselves  to take action and fight injustice everywhere.

Featured Presentation

3:15:pm EST | 12:15pm PST
“From Celebration to Canonization: MLK the Man & the Myth Revisited”
w/Dr. LAMONT McKIM and LOIS MOSES, Esq.
Join Dr. LaMont McKim and Lois Moses as they explore the play "Say That He Had More Than A Dream…." as an entry point to take heed of Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy as a rallying cry, moving beyond pacification (e.g. "turn the other cheek") to mobilization and ultimate sacrifice. Dr. LaMont McKim will provide a discussion template for redefining, reframing, and restoring "the vernacular" as it pertains to our narratives of our cultural s/heroes (icons/saints), while highlighting the peaks and valleys of their mortality and the magnitude of their humanity and importance of their legacy.

3:45pm EST | 12:45pm PST
”Heart Based Action”
w/SARAH IRELAND
We cannot move to action without first having a solid ground to anchor ourselves. The same is true for the body+mind. We’ll begin this practice with an individualized grounding posture and move from it to join together in a heart based moving meditation.

4:05pm EST | 1:05pm PST

"Sat Nam Meditation”
w/BONGEKILE NGUZA

4:25pm EST | 1:25pm PST

”Restoring the Body, Healing the Heart”
w/ELIKA AIRD
When we are constantly focused on the harsh words, the criticisms , and the inequities that we and our ancestors have endured, we can often keep our hearts closed to giving and receiving love in a balanced way. Let’s be guided by the deeply profound and poetic words of Dr King’s spiritual advisor and mentor, Dr Howard Thurman, just as he was. We will take time to rest our hearts, bodies, and minds in a sweet restorative practice as we receive the timeless wisdom and inspiration from “More Loving in My Heart.”

4:45pm EST | 1:45pm PST

”Satyagraha Breath”
w/NAOMI PEREIRA
Satyagraha is a form of nonviolent resistance. The practice begins by experiencing it ourselves. Using the Conscious Connected Breath,we breathe into resisting the need to do or act, we breathe into holding firmly(graha) to our truth(satya). We then relax & dissolve into sacred, holy rest from which we carry the seed of nonviolence into our lives & those of others.
