I AM BLACK HISTORY.

black_history-01.jpg

At Yoga Jubilee we usually host a day long event to commemorate special days. But since February is the shortest and coldest month (at least in North America) of the year we wanted to celebrate Black History differently! And decided to celebrate Black History 10 extra days in 2021!

The theme for this month+ long celebration was, "I am Black History!" Everyday from February 1 -March 10, 2021, Yoga Jubilee released an offering by a different instructor of artist. We hope you enjoy practicing, engaging with our community, and learning more about Black History. A history that is a part of all of our histories.

DESCRIPTION: In this creative-historical interpretive film artist Bryce Payne conveys the possible emotional experience of trekking through "The Middle Passage", where enslaved Africans are confronted with a perplexing choice, demonstrating some freedoms require great sacrifice.

ABOUT BRYCE

Bryce is a hermit, a friend, a lover, and a fighter... When xe's not singing into faces or exploring the feeling of xyr weight on the floor, xe is often singing into microphones, or struggling to survive; in fact, xe often sings into microphones about struggling to survive. It can all get very meta... Xe likes to think xyr work bridges heart attack seriousness to a strong sense of irreverence, but ultimately xe would rather let you judge. Or really, xe would actually prefer you refrain from judging, but xe understands that no one is perfect.

DESCRIPTION: Notice your breath, come home to your body: this meditation is an invitation to spend some time being present with yourself. It was made with a lot of love and the intention that all who listen find a moment of respite and connection with their innate wholeness. Notice your breath, come home to your body: this meditation is an invitation to spend some time being present with yourself. It was made with a lot of love and the intention that all who listen find a moment of respite and connection with their innate wholeness. In August of 2020, a wildfire destroyed my house and nearly everything I owned - but it did not take my true home. Whatever losses and challenges we are leaving behind as we move into 2021, remember that home is right here, in this moment, present with our bodies, our loved ones, and the blessed gift of breath that connects all of us to each other.

DESCRIPTION: We are Free Because of Harriet Tubman is a meditation on resistance, history and nature. Professor Sanchez’s words speak to us today as many in America struggle to find their own liberation. The imagery is meant to heal and aid the viewer in reflection upon the text. The four and a half minute film was shot on location in Harmony Maryland, along the Underground Railroad Trail as marked by the state of Maryland and in Philadelphia, where Harriet Tubman found refuge in a community of Free Blacks and Quakers.

ABOUT DAWN

Dawn began her yoga journey in 1999 when she bought a Rodney Yee VHS yoga videotape. She would practice yoga in her basement as a way to bring fitness and stress relief into her life. A couple of years later, she joined a gym and practiced yoga there until she discovered a yoga studio that became her home for almost 10 years. There she found love, acceptance, and community. In 2013, she became a 200-hour certified yoga teacher through Cleveland Yoga, and in 2019, Dawn completed her 300-hour yoga teacher training with Faith Hunter at Embrace Yoga DC. Her studio, Daybreak Yoga opened in October 2018. In addition to offering daily classes at Daybreak Yoga, Dawn hosts yoga teacher training, mindfulness and yoga workshops, collaborative projects, and a mentorship program.

DESCRIPTION: Experience release during a sacred practice of yin and meditation. Yin Yoga is a slow paced practice in which poses are held for a longer period of time. The body is stretched to aid in release of stress and psychological trauma. In this class, we will begin to release the thought patterns that no longer serve us and so that we can reconnect with the core of who we are. Not who we will be or who we were but the ever changing display of our present and beautiful self, right now at this moment.
